May Wellness Feature: Finding Joy & Gratitude Amid Mental Health Challenges
May is Mental Health Awareness Month—and a perfect time to remind ourselves that even during hard times, we can find strength in small moments of joy and the habit of gratitude.
For those living with mental health conditions like anxiety, depression, or burnout, positive emotions can feel out of reach. But research shows that intentionally focusing on joyful moments—even brief ones—can help ease stress, support emotional regulation, and strengthen resilience. It doesn’t mean ignoring what’s hard—it means creating space for what helps us feel grounded and hopeful.
Gratitude is also a powerful mental health tool. Taking a moment to name what we’re thankful for can shift the brain’s focus away from fear and frustration. Over time, practicing gratitude—even if it’s just once a day—can support mood, lower cortisol (the stress hormone), and increase feelings of self-worth.
Simple ways to build joy and gratitude into your day:
- Notice the good: A warm meal, a shared smile, the comfort of routine.
- Gratitude journaling: Write down three things you’re grateful for each night—even small things count.
- Connect with others: Express thanks, appreciation, or kindness—it lifts both of you.
- Take mindful breaks: A quiet moment, a breath of fresh air, or listening to your favorite music.
This May let’s support mental health—not just through awareness, but through small, consistent practices that nurture the whole person. Joy and gratitude aren’t cures—but they are companions on the path to wellness.
Here’s to wellness, inside and out!
