Clover Bar Lodge Funding Announcement

Posted on Mar 16, 2017

As part of its 2017 Alberta budget, tabled today, the Province of Alberta has allocated $32.4 million to rebuild the Clover Bar Lodge in Sherwood Park.

The existing lodge has 75 rooms, and a waiting list of 44 people. The waiting list for all Heartland Housing lodges is 162 people. The intent is to build a new facility with approximately 144 units.

“This is good news for our community,” says Mayor Roxanne Carr. “The province clearly recognizes the growing need for affordable seniors’ accommodation, and supports the desire of its citizens to age in place.”

To address the need, Council last year created the Mayor’s Task Force on Community Housing, co-chaired by councillors Carla Howatt and Fiona Beland-Quest. These same councillors also sit on the Heartland Housing Foundation Board.

“Today’s announcement supports recommendations coming from that task force; specifically, recommendation 5.1: That County Council and administration continue to seek provincial and federal funding to continue with affordable housing programs,” Mayor Carr says.

Stew Hennig, Heartland Housing Foundation Board Chair, adds, “we are pleased with the announcement today of capital money for the replacement of Clover Bar Lodge. We look forward to working with Strathcona County and the Alberta Government, Ministry of Seniors and Housing, on this project. Replacement of the lodge and additional units will help meet the needs of the citizens of the communities we serve for affordable housing options.”
